Actually, this is nothing new nor has it anything to do with America. I learned this directly from first generation Chinese immigrant women. It is also true in Japan. They find a lighter complexion far more desirable than darker, but it is for a different cultural reason.
In China and in Japan, people who have sun-tanned skin are viewed as peasants. To make a long story short, the people who do physical work, like farmers, fishermen, outdoor vendors etc. have suntans. People who do office work or run businesses etc. do not.
Asian women, traditionally, go through great pains to protect their skin from the sun for this reason. It is also why men with bulging muscles are not considered sexy. Look at most Chinese or Japanese men and they are usually lean but not muscular. Again, men with bulging muscles and tough hands are seen as peasants. Men with lean bodies and soft hands use their wits.
Ironically, in America, the sexy standard is more geared towards, muscular, tanned men and tanned women. Americans actually pay to get tans. Even spray on tans. A lot of men pump iron.
Where you will see American influence, in this regard, is with some of the Japanese youth. They are called “Ganguro” I attached a link for you.
