There isn’t a woman in the world who doesn’t want to multitask. So we asked WH columnist Amy Dixon, an exercise physiologist and group fitness manager for Equinox in Santa Monica, California, to create a workout that builds muscle, improves flexibility, and melts away stress.

These moves roll yoga and strength into one neat package. They’re so effective because every exercise calls on your entire core and requires balance (thanks to the yoga moves), so your whole body–not just the targeted muscle–works through its full range of motion. Tackle the moves two nonconsecutive days a week and you’ll notice sleeker definition–and a calmer mindset–within four weeks.

You’re hell-bent on finishing your final set of lunges. But your body is rebelling: Lunch is threatening to leap out of your stomach, and your legs are on fire. Just a few years ago, scientists would have blamed your roiling insides and screaming stems on energy depletion and lactic acid buildup. But more recent studies show that lactic acid actually feeds your muscles during a hard effort. In other words, it’s trying to help you, not slow you down.

What’s really standing between your will and your workout is your brain. In 2007, researchers at the University of Wisconsin measured electrical activity in the muscles of exercisers while they pedaled stationary bikes. As their performance declined, so did electrical activity, which is doled out directly from–you guessed it–mission control. Turns out your brain can give out on your muscles whenever it wants to–even if your body has enough energy left for five more sets. Of course, everyone has a true limit (don’t try to bang out an Ironman tomorrow), but your noggin often puts on the brakes sooner than necessary.

So why does your brain act like an overprotective parent on prom night? Especially when you know that getting through the last painful set of lunges increases your chances of waking up tomorrow with buns of Biel? Here’s what’s going on: When you work out harder than you’re used to, your brain thinks, we have no data on whether an extra set of deadlifts will damage her body. I’d better make her pretty damn uncomfortable by reducing electrical output to the muscles so she’ll quit this nonsense. That’s when you start to poop out, cut your losses, and head for the showers.

But you can recalibrate your brain to chill–whether you’re strength training or trying to shave a few minutes off your half-marathon pace. The key is to train it to think Been there, done that. According to studies by Tim Noakes, M.D., a professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and the author of The Lore of Running, exposing your muscles to fatigue in a systematic and progressive manner sensitizes your brain to the extra effort in a way that keeps it from freaking out about sudden changes. One way to get the job done: isometrics, exercises that work your muscles without your actually moving them. Instead, you hold specific contractions for a set amount of time; adding more time increases your endurance. Dive into this heady isometric workout and within five weeks, you’ll have your melon completely brainwashed.

It is also well known that postpartum exercise helps to rediscover a new mom’s sense of identity. It also helps to improve mental stability and restore cardiovascular fitness.

Giving birth causes a lot of changes in your body. Give your body time to recover. It takes up to six months after pregnancy to return to normal. Crash dieting and binge exercising can be dangerous and may delay your recovery. So, don’t rush to cut calories or you may feel completely exhausted to fulfill the demands of the infant. Just concentrate on eating healthy and balanced diet to give you the required energy to cope with your responsibilities.

Postpartum Exercises to Get Back in Shape

You can start with low-impact exercise in the beginning. This way you can increase your energy levels and also beat away your postpartum depressiondefine. So, exercising is an absolute must and may include walking, jogging or doing some other exercise to help you get back to shape at the earliest. It helps in toning up the stretched muscles and helps with good posture.

Always make a slow start to your fitness routine after childbirth. Especially, if you are a breastfeeding mom, you need to work out at a low intensity to prevent the accumulation of lactic acid in your milk. Although long walks are preferably good, the choice is entirely your own.

Whether you walk, jog or exercise, moderation is the keyword as your vulnerable body needs time to adjust to the changes that have taken place during pregnancy and after the childbirth. High intensity workouts are not recommended or you may end up with serious injuries to your joints or ligaments. Also, keep a close watch for warning signs including breathlessness and excessive vaginal bleeding. If you find any of these symptoms persisting for more than 2 days, then you must see your doctor before resuming your fitness regime.

Physically fit mothers are quick to recover from childbirth than unfit moms, suggest the experts. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the physiologic effects of pregnancy may continue for up to six weeks postpartum, so new moms should resume activity in accordance with their tolerance levels. Those with complicated pregnancies or caesarian delivery may take longer to recover after the childbirth.

You may find it difficult to get time for exercise, especially with the new found responsibilities leaving you overwhelmed. But remember, ËœWhere there is a will, there is a way.’ So, gear up to bounce back into health and fitness once again after childbirth by either exercising in the comfort of your own home or joining a gym which offer on-site daycare for babies.

You can also join post-natal exercises which help new moms interact with other moms having babies the same age. So, you can enjoy exercising with the group while your baby is taken care of in a crèche.

After the childbirth, the pelvic floor becomes weak. So, pelvic floor exercises should be your focus during the initial period following childbirth. However, in case of a caesarean delivery, do not begin the exercise program until before 10-12 weeks. It is very important that you strengthen your pelvic muscles before attempting other exercises. Initially, you may feel fatigued or weak, but the rule of thumb is that the more you do, the stronger the muscles will become helping to prevent prolapse of the uterusdefine.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to listen to your body and go at your own pace. If you smell any danger, stop immediately and consult your doctor. So, here’s wishing the best of health and good physique to all new moms.

A study of more than thirty thousand postmenopausal American women, reported in BioMed Central’s open access journal Breast Cancer Research, has revealed that a sedentary lifestyle can be a risk factor for the disease “ even in women who are not overweight.

.

The first thing you should if you suspect something is wrong is to visit your doctor. Signs of diabetes are normally noticed through serious dehydration occasioned by frequent urination and drinking of water.

I remember this tale where a wife observed that her husband diabetic through his frequent visits to the toilet. It was like every 30minutes, he would dart off to go pee. She also noticed he was drinking quite frequently. She pointed all these too him. And sure enough, when he visited his doctor, he told him he had diabetes.

First visit your doctor. Once it has confirmed it is diabetes, find out what type it is, whether type 1 or type 2. If you are adult, it would most likely be type 2.

Then get as much information as possible as knowledge is king.

Managing diabetes starts with managing the glucose cycle. Diabetes is basically the bodies inability to absorb the glucose existing in the body.

The glucose cycle in your body is affected by two factors. The two factors are the entry of glucose into the bloodstream and blood levels of insulin to transport the glucose out.

The glucose level is very sensitive to your eating pattern or regimen and it is therefore of importance that this issue is discussed with your doctor. He will dictate to you the kinds of food you should desist from. These usual suspects are the oil saturated food and some types of carbohydrates. Remember that carbohydrates produce a lot of glucose and therefore must be clearly controlled.

A proper management will involve a complete change in your lifestyle especially when it comes to food consumption. This will not be easy but you have no option here. half of all amputations in America are diabetes induced. I am yet to include blindness, heart attacks and stroke! You have to be disciplined!

It will also involve engaging in exercise as a lack fo proper exercise and obesity also lead to the onset of this ailment. With a good exercise regime, your blood sugar levels will collapse to much normal levels.

There was the case of this Pacific Island nation where a high percentage of them are diabetics. Upon returning to their original diets, dating before the arrival of the white man, diabetes disappeared! Food does matter. And exercise.

It is essential that you monitor your blood sugar levels daily. We are quite fortunate today that we live in a period of time where it is possible for people to easily know their blood sugar levels due to the many handheld blood monitors available in the market. Endeavor to avail yourself of one of these.

If you notice your blood sugar levels high, increase your exercise and reduce your intake of harmful foods. This should bring it down. It will also indicate whether insulin is needed. Insulin intake is of utmost importance.

My aunt was diabetic before she died. She advised my uncle, her younger brother to take mints and he found it quite helpful. I am not recommending it however. Before trying anything new, always consult your doctor.

You have a vacation coming up in a couple of months, and you really want to look your best. You’ve been to the gym everyday “ so much so, in fact, that you’re beginning to think of it as your second home. You’re determined to look good in that new bathing suit you bought.

You’re also trying to do whatever you can to find out about prevention of spider veins. Unfortunately, that malady runs in your family, and you don’t want to be the next victim. However, you don’t know too much about the prevention of spider veins, so you’ve decided to look for answers online

.

First of all, you’re surprised at how many websites there are that have to do with the prevention of spider veins. You’ve gone from having no information, to lots of information in just a couple of clicks. However, it’s best to focus on the information that’s applicable to your situation, rather than those people who already have spider veins.

Thus, what you really need to think about when it comes to prevention of spider veins is in terms of your exercise intake “ you don’t really have any. You sit behind your desk hour after hour at work, only getting up to go to the bathroom or have lunch. Believe it or not, that’s one of the main causes of spider veins “ not enough exercise.

Sitting in one place too long causes the blood to pool in the veins, and the result of that often shows up in circulatory problems. Speaking of which, another thing that you can do to prevent these kinds of veins is eat a healthy diet. A diet that’s high in fat will often end up resulting in those poor circulation problems.

But, here’s the annoying thing “ these kinds of things also happen in people who get too much exercise. Say, for example, that you were a basketball player in college. If you weren’t sitting on the bench the entire time, then you were most likely running around a lot. Your legs as a result, got a significant amount of exercise. So much, in fact, that it can manifest as veins later on.

So, too much exercise can cause veins, too little exercisewhere’s the happy medium in all of this? Well, ideally, if you have a predisposition to these kinds of veins, you should get your main source of exercise from walking. Also, you should keep in mind that sometimes genetics will happen anyway, despite all of your best efforts.

Aside from keeping fit and eating healthy, basically there’s nothing else to do until you actually get one of those veins. When the time comes, you should see a dermatologist, who can provide you with a bunch of options when it comes to treatments.

Remember, this isn’t the 18th century, when veins were all over people’s legs and they couldn’t do anything about it. This is the 21st century, where you can have medicine injected into the veins so that they will eventually disappear.

You know the scenario well. After a day at your desk, your back is screaming in pain. It seems no matter which way you try readjust your posture the pain still persists, making it nearly impossible to concentrate on your job.

In addition to routine office work, many occupations such as nursing, construction or factory work can place significant demands on your back. But by paying close attention to what causes your pain, you can focus on efforts to bring about pain relief and prevention.

While doctors and scientists aren’t entirely sure of all the causes of back injury, most back problems are probably the result of a combination of factors

. Some factors are not preventable, such as family history. Other factors such as weight, fitness and flexibility, can be controlled by making changes to lifestyle. Existing work factors which contribute to back problems may or may not be modified to prevent injury. Four work-related factors are associated with increased risk of back injury:

1. Force: Exerting too much force on your back may cause injury. If you job is physical in nature, you may face injury if you frequently life or move heavy objects.

2. Repetition: Repetition refers to the number of time you perform a certain movement. Tasks that require repetition can lead to muscle fatigue or injury, particularly if they involve stretching to the end of your range of motion or awkward body positioning.

3. Posture: Posture refers to your position when sitting, standing or performing a task. For instance, those who spend most of their time in front of a computer may experience occasional aches and pains from sitting still for extended periods of time. On average, a body can tolerate one position for about 20 minutes before you feel the need to adjust.

4. Stress: Pressure at work or home not only increase your stress level, but can lead to muscle tension and tightness, which may in turn lead to back pain.

Avoiding Injuries

It can never be emphasized enough that fitness plays a huge role in preventing back injury and can bring about pain relief for those currently suffering from back problems. To avoid future back problems, your best bet is to be as fit as you can be and take steps to make your work and working environment as safe as possible.

Even for those whose jobs require physical exertion, exercise is still is a must for good health. Regular exercise is also a must for maintaining a healthy back. Firstly, you’ll keep your weight in check. Carrying around a healthy weight for your body’s frame minimizes stress on the back. There are specific strengthening and stretching exercises that target back muscles. Regular exercise also increases long-term flexibility. Strong and flexible muscles keep your back in its best shape.

Poor posture at work is a key offender to back problems. Slouching or standing with a swayback exaggerates the body’s natural curves. Such posture can lead to muscle fatigue and injury. Good posture, in contrast, relaxes muscles and requires minimal effort to balance the body.

When standing for long periods of time, rest one foot on a stool or small box from time to time. Hold reading material at eye level when standing. Avoid bending forward to do desk work or handwork. To promote comfort and good posture while sitting, choose a chair that supports the back. Adjust the chair so that you feet stay planted on the floor. Use a rolled towel or small pillow if you chair does not support your lower back’s curve.

Also, look at the setup of your workspace. Consider how you could modify repetitive job tasks to reduce physical demands. If you’re on the phone most of the day, use a headset. Avoid cradling the phone between you shoulder and ear to free up your hands for other tasks. If you work on a computer, make sure the monitor and chair are positioned properly. If you sit for prolonged periods, take a 30-second timeout every 15 minutes to stretch, move or relax. Avoid unnecessary bending, twisting and reaching. Limit the time you spend carrying heavy objects, such as briefcases, boxes, and purses.

Finally, to minimize the stress that can lead to tense back muscles, try to reduce the sources of that stress at home and on the job. Develop coping mechanisms for times when you feel really stressed. For instance, perform deep-breathing exercises, take a walk around the block, or talk about your frustrations with a trusted friend.

Age is something that everybody tries to avoid. However, it is not completely in our own hands at this moment. Research is going in all over the world to discover the possibilities and methods to prevent aging. Nevertheless, we currently can slow down the process of aging to some extent. Specific daily habits will help you remain younger for some more time. The following article provides useful information on anti aging and if you are one of those seeking information on anti aging then the following article is going to be helpful to you

With the 2008 Olympics in full swing, many people are realizing the importance of a great sense of fitness and health in having a strong mind, body, and spirit that can help one break and set new records in the most significant sports event of the year. They want to learn tips on how to get in shape the right way so that they too can be fit and healthy like the athletes they see conquering their respective games in China.

If you want to be fit and healthy, the first thing you need to do is to evaluate the way your body is now as honestly as you can
<!--
. Only with acceptance can you start training or employing the lifestyle change you need. Think long and hard about the choices you make everyday that affects your fitness and health, like what you eat, how much you exercise (if you do at all), and your general perception of what being fit and healthy means.

Being fit basically means having a body that gets proper and regular exercise. Without exercise, your body will accumulate more and more fats that will be left untransformed into energy, resulting in your getting fat as cholesterol builds up. When you get fat, you are immediately at a higher risk of having or acquiring more serious medical conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart attack.

Start the road to fitness and health with a simple but effective exercise routine. Instead of always taking a cab, try walking short distances, and instead of always taking the elevator, try taking the stairs. It’s time to use those memberships and actually hit the gym. Walking on the treadmill for at least 30 minutes every day until you’re up for more is enough to get you started. Jogging is also recommended to help strengthen your lungs and circulate blood well into your body. Any form of exercise that you can incorporate into your life, like lifting grocery bags, is welcome. If you can afford a trainer who can supervise you with a program, then by all means hire one.

The next thing you need to focus on is your diet. No matter how hard you exercise, if you keep an unhealthy diet, you wouldn’t be able to achieve your goal of becoming fit and healthy. What you eat will be a big part of your training towards fitness and health. A positive outlook is essential if you want to succeed in your personal quest – keep telling yourself that it can be done; the truth is, with determination, it really can. Be conscious of what you decide to put in your mouth. Avoid fast foods and other fatty foods and instead pick out fruits and vegetables in the market. These days, there are many recipes that make healthy foods that taste good, too. Loading up on water and fluids can help your body feel full, which allows you to take small meals that can be digested more easily.

It might take some time – and a whole lot of talent – before you can make it to the next Olympics, but with these fitness and health tips, you can be just as fit and healthy as any athlete.
