How Do You Care For A 2 Year Old Shitzu Dog?
I’m going to get a 2 year old Shitzu dog, that has been very well taken care of by a family. My concerns are the following:
1.) How will a male cat and a girl dog shitzu get along?
2.) When leaving the house should I cage her or block off an area for her because she’s so active?
3) When leaving the house should I put paper down just in case? Accidents can happen.
4) Over all health care. Bath, teeth, ears, hair cuts, well visits.
5) How to controll barking at doorbells and people
6) Should I take to a trainer
7) When to give doggie treats
Adjusting to a new family
And anything I might of missed. I really would like to get this right the 1st time around. And give this dog the best home ever. Help please……
1.) How will a male cat and a girl dog shitzu get along?
You’ll tell yourself “I’m not going to spoil her!” then she’ll look really adorable and you’ll end up spoiling her.
Adjusting to a new family
More than gender it depends on your dog’s temperment and socialization. Animals tend to get along better with the opposite sex, but if the dog dislikes cats then it’s going to dislike all cats. This comes down to training.
2.) When leaving the house should I cage her or block off an area for her because she’s so active?
Is she destructive? I like to give my dogs two walks a day, one before work and one when I get home. This helps keep them from being destructive. If she’s house broken then there’s no need to lock her up.
3) When leaving the house should I put paper down just in case? Accidents can happen.
Accidents don’t really “happen” at two, or they should be so infrequent that paper would be more of a nuicense than anything. Teaching an already housebroken dog to use paper would be counterproductive and confusing to the pooch.
4) Over all health care. Bath, teeth, ears, hair cuts, well visits.
Even if she just had a vet visit, take her in for a second one just to be sure and also so the vet can get you on record as a client and keep you posted of when she’s due in for a physical.
She should be bathed once every six weeks, brushed out once a week, teeth done every night, nails once a week, and ears once a week.
5) How to controll barking at doorbells and people
A firm “No” is usually enough, followed by praise for being quiet.
6) Should I take to a trainer
If she hasn’t had obedience training yet, or if she “relapses” into bad behaviour due to the stress of being relocated, then that would be a good idea. Also training is a good way for the two of you to bond and to establish yourself as pack leader.
7) When to give doggie treats
You’ll figure this one out.
This one is tough, give her lots of love and time. If she doesn’t want to be touched at first, then let her be. She just needs to adjust to the new enviroment, and the new people.
Dogs mourn their packs! She’s going to miss her old family for a while, this doesn’t mean she’ll never be happy with you, it just means that she’s going to be kind of sad for a while. Just keep letting her know that she’s part of your family now and that she’s loved and she’ll come around.
Have fun! Dogs are really furry little blessings.
Most of your questions could/should be answered by the family who currently owns the dog. They can let you know what the dog is used to as far as caging, feeding, etc. A good trainer can help you introduce changes to the dog’s current habits that you need to make.
I can’t answer all of those, but a few I will give a shot. for
2.) I wouldn’t recommend caging her, it will only make her more rowdy when released, instead put her in a room by herself when you leave that way she won’t have any altercations with the cat and still be able to roam.
3) putting papers down would be a great idea, I’m not exactly sure how the process of teaching them how to use the paper goes but I know it works cause thats what my parents did with my dogs
5) if you have a can with marbles(or other type of noise maker) shake it at the dog and firmly say no bark and eventually she’ll stop barking so much. she won’t like the sound and its alot nicer than some other methods.
7)give her treats while training her and she does things right. like with the paper, that reinforces good behavior. Hope this little bit helps.
there are so many things you need to learn – go to a library or google it and look up ‘how to have a puppy’
if anyone was to answer this question now, it would go on for pages!!!
but yes, get a trainer….
Wow, that’s a big order.. Why don’t you talk to her current owners and ask them what they recommend in all cases.. If she is well taken care of now.. Then take their advice and continue with what they are doing.
