Care After Horse’s Teeth Are Floated?
I bought my first horse a few months ago. He had his teeth floated yesterday. How soon can I put a bridle on him? He seems to be eating fine, doesn’t seem bothered. I wasn’t here when the vet was here so I didn’t get any after-care instructions.
Any info would be helpful—thanks!!
you can put his bridle on now. and just for the future you should always be there when your vet is there especially if its her first time with your horse.
I’d wait a week or so, just for time to get him used to them and to give them a chance to settle.
This is when I’ve used a bitless bridle before now, I can continue work but without disturbing the teeth.
you can ride him with a bit as soon as the job is done, as long as he wasnt sedated, if he was then wait 12 hours for the sedative to wear off.
A properly fitted bit does not touch the teeth.
I wait at least a few days. The more work that a veterinarian had to do on the horse’s teeth the sorer the horse’s mouth will be after. Give him a little time to get used to the new feel of the teeth and to allow any soreness to go away. If you put a bit in right after his teeth have just been done, it could cause him to throw his head or try evading the bit or some other bad habit because he is sore. Better to wait a bit than to rush things and he picks up some bad habits or you get into an arguement with him because his mouth is sore and he’s acting up from the pain of having a bit in his mouth.
You can put a bridle on at any time. In fact, having his teeth floated can make his mouth more comfortable with the bit in addition to making it easier for him to chew his food.
***Sharp points on teeth can make a horse’s mouth very uncomfortable without a bit to complicate matters.
as soon as the vets done you can put a bit in and ride you dont need to wait : )
As long as your horse wasn’t sedated and the floating didn’t result in any cuts in the mouth, you can ride right away.
