Post-operation Care For Wisdom Teeth Extraction?
I had eight teeth removed yesterday (4 impacted wisdom teeth and 4 teeth for bracing). Is it normal to still taste blood in the mouth? I do not think the wounds are bleeding very much, but the consistent taste of blood is worrying me.
I rinsed my mouth a few times yesterday – several times using plain water after food and several times using the mouthwash they gave me. I read online, however, that it is generally not advised for the patient to rinse their mouth during the first 24 hours. Do you think the rinsing I did will affect the wounds very much? I did not rinse very hard though. I just kept the water in my mouth and moved my head instead of really gargling.
The wounds are giving me little problems though. There is swelling but very little pain so far. I am still worried because eight teeth pulled at the same time is a lot to me. Any advice on post-operation care is appreciated.

Don’t try to do too much stay quiet and just lay around the rest of what your doing is fine. You will start to feel better in a few days.
It is not a good idea to rinse your mouth right after the operation because it can cause the stitches to come out. The blood taste is normal (at least it was for me, I had all 4 out at once too) but if you start to get a coating on your tongue, you might be reacting badly.
Some bleeding is to be expected and the swelling is common. Did they give you anything for the swelling. If not Advil can help. Just follow the directions and if the bleeding is bad or you are in pain in a few days let them know they will possibly pack the area with gauze and clove oil. This acts as both a numbing agent and helps fight bacteria.
Don’t do this yourself let the doctor decide.
You didn’t do any harm by gentle rinsing. The reason you still taste blood is because you probably are still having some minor oozing. It’s not a big deal, and nothing to worry about since you can see any blood to speak of. Not everyone experiences a lot of pain in the days after extraction. It depends on the condition of the teeth and some on the skill of your dentist. Since your wisdom teeth had not erupted yet, that means they were not anchored in the jawbone yet. That means the only part of the bone that has been injured is the locations of the other four teeth. I assume those were canine teeth, top and bottom, which have smaller roots and not such big holes are left in the jaw bones. So pain is not likely to be as big a problem. The swelling can be reduced by applying ice for today, and then swapping to moist heat tomorrow. Stick with soft foods for a few days, and continue with the gentle rinsing. A toddler size toothbrush will make brushing easier as well, and let you avoid the healing sites. Stay away from highly spiced foods, foods that make “bits” like rice and such, and swish rinse after you eat. If you feel a dull ache in the bone beneath an extraction site, then you need to drink until you feel like floating, take some Motrin and call the dentist to be seen. The “dry socket” you hear about isn’t so likely in your case, as that’s more a problem with back teeth than front. That will generally not be likely either, but also doesn’t show up until about the 3-4 day post-removal. If you have other questions, you should call the office of the oral surgeon or dentist who did your procedure. Meantime, just rest and relax, and heal.
I don’t know if it helps, but after i got my four wisdom teeth pulled, the surgeon instructed me to rinse my mouth with lukewarm salt water two or three times a day.
